Solid cheap router to use as a WAP only

Anyone got a router they recommend that is cheap to serve as a wireless access point only? The uplink will be wired.

Only has Tbase 100 ports, but since you are using it as a wireless AP, it shouldn't make a lick of difference.

I usually recommend the WNDR3400 for about $10 more, but they don't have any refurbs right now.

Scared of refurbs? Don't be. I don't think I would ever buy a refurb router for use as a router, but for AP use, I have picked up 3 and haven't had any trouble in over a year.

My lil $14 refurb D-Link DIR-601a1 w/DD-WRT has been rock solid 😀 Mostly used as a client bridge with Gargoyle for an old 360 without built-in wireless (50 bucks for a USB wireless adapter? lolmicrosoft) but has been a main router at my mother-in-laws with great results.

They were great 8 years ago, but absolutely no one should be buying them now.

OP - how cheap? Does 5ghz matter? Does range matter?

5 gigs is not important. Range wise it just has to cover about a 750 sq ft area. We have a separate rental property on our house that has a cat5 line ran to it. The unit had a ubiquiti unifi which was bricked by their own auto update and they refuse to fix it as it is 6mos out of warranty. I need a replacement unit for about 45 days as a Meraki MR12 will then be going in.

I've always loved the D-Link DWL-2100AP. Hasn't been in production for at least eight or ten years, but I'm still using one on my home network and it covers my smallish house very well. You can find them on eBay for under $30.

What I would do under this circumstances is get the least expensive DD-WRT capable Wireless Router that I can find.

Reason is that if it needed for short time and than put aside, it always good to have around some thing with flexible good firmware.

After long period of time there is few of these around (or giving to other family/friends member's). By using DD-WRT it is easy to deal with all of these "relics" since with DD-WRT, while the outside plastic looks different they use the same Firmware and interface.
