im not to sure what forum to post this in but it seems to fit in here.

Is soldering hard to do? i want to convert a controller card to raid and it involves soldering....im gonna buy a few extras since they are cheap (here in hot deals.)

what do i need to solder? i saw a little thing for i think 20$ at radio shack.

I don't know what you're soldering, but I wouldn't attack any computer parts without having some experience. I've been soldering for a couple of years, but I have never tackled anything as small as a computer card/board etc. You would need avery fine tip for anything on a computer (far as I can tell).. and a good steady hand. Practice on something first, maybe make that baybus you've been dreaming about. (that's the kind of soldering you could get some practice with)... just my thoughts though.
 
I did that hack, and found it easy. However I have been soldering for a couple of years. I still think a newbie could do it, just practice a few times on some old circuit board that is useless & a length of wire. The only way you could really mess up the card in doing the mod is if you hold the iron on too long & fry the chip. A good tip would be to 'tin' the soldering iron before you go in. This means to have a fair amount of solder on the iron, that will transfer over to the connection when you touch it. This will allow you to have the iron touching it for the shortest period of time.
 
You want an iron that will do light soldering work....I would recommend a 25w one, and grab a roll of solder along with it. Definitely practice first. Try not to use too much solder on the joints....if you do it right, just a little will do fine. Good luck 🙂
 
If you don't know something about soldering I would practice ALOT before you do attempt it. You'll only get mad at yourself if you don't and end up melting components on the board. A 15 watt iron should be more than adequet for the job. Also make sure you pick up the thinner solder for the job as well. Get a HEATSINK and use it. Some kits come with a little clip on type.

Also, if you don't know what a cold solder joint is then I would suggest you not try it until you do!
 
I've never soldered before, so i went out and got a gun, flux, solder, and an led, cuz I wanted to mod my case light to be blue. I practiced twice, but I'm not very good, so I want to try once or twice more before I tear things open.
