Soldering help needed.

My headphones went out so i found the splice and want to solder it. The wires are tiny twisted strands that has color coating that solder wont stick to. Is there a easy way to remove the coating? i usually use sand paper but these wires just get torn apart before getting most of the coating off.

try a sharp blade (eg box cutter)? I remember dealing with those types of wires by flattening the strands and scrubbing them between my thumb and the blade. of course if the strands are REALLY tiny this probably won't work either
