Soldering guns have wattage rating anywhere between 100 and 300 watts. Soldering irons have ratings anywhere below 100w or so. I have a small 25w iron that I use for all of my electrical wire soldering. I then have a 150/300 (I belive those #'s are right) gun that I use for attaching coaxal connectors (we work with a lot of 1/2" and 7/8" Andrews hardline). If you need more energy than what a gun can give, well, you use a blow torch like plumbers do. If your soldering sheet metal together, then you use a blow torch.

BTW- guns have 2 electrodes that come out of it and combine to form the tip. Guns usually have tips with large surface areas. Irons can have whatever type of tip you want. If you're soldering wire connections, then you want a big surface area. If you're soldering PC components, then you want a very small surface area. My 25w iron has an assortment of tips, one is as pointy as a needle (it is good for working on surface mount component). My gun has a tip that is the size of my pinky; it is very large!
