What happens if the soldered ram fails on your computer?

So I am asking this question mainly directed towards the lenovo thinkpad t450s.

It has soldered ram, but also an expansion slot for more ram. If the soldered ram fails, can I run the laptop off the expansion ram that I put in?

There are no option in the bios to disable the on board memory. You would need a system board replacement in that event.

I wonder why Lenovo don't option it an option in the bios.

So you have to pay to get it fixed, or use them. If the memory that failed, is replaced in the Extra slot I assume you would need to remove the failed memory. Though it may work, if you do replace it make sure same make model speed size etc. That's not to say it will automatically work, they go to great lengths to keep people out of them........

HOw long can soldered ram last?

Do ram usually come faulty in Thinkpad? Is it a very rare occurrence you would say?

"Market" lifetime, not human lifetime.
That's one of the meanings of limited lifetime warranty: product lifetime on the market. The other meaning is "as long as owned by the original buyer". For example, AFAIK Kingston offers Lifetime Warranty related to the life of the product, but Crucial on the other hand seems to offer warranty as long as the original buyer owns the product. (see Crucial here)

Lexar, sister company of Crucial, even says it in plain English for their flash memory products:
As long as owned by original purchaser (limited to 10 years from purchase in Germany)
Anyway, my original comment was meant to relay a clear message to the OP: RAM manufacturers do no expect a good RAM chip to die from old age in less than 10 years.

Factory RAM included with laptops tends to be higher quality than stick RAM. Notice it has actual part numbers and is not overclocked.
