...he claims that it's because I modified the phone so when he called VM, the customer representative was unable to activate the phone for him.

I had the phone (Motorola Triumph) running a very popular Sharp 2.2.2 ROM and never had a problem. I have a hard time believing his story but want to verify before coming to a conclusion.

Would VM not be able to activate a phone if it's rooted? I had it factory reset to wipe out all of my personal information before shipping. Is there a way to verify with VM on this phone with this issue?

I vaguely remember giving my friend my old sprint phone and the activation was wonky. Data wasn't coming through so I had to factory reset, have him activate, and then reflash rom.

Did you already put another phone on your account? Maybe you have to de-authorize your line first?

I switched another carrier more than a year ago, so the phone hasn't been in used during all this time. I was unable to logon to my Virgin Mobile account last night, I think they already deleted/deactivated my account already.

Not familiar with VM but have sold and bought rooted phones numerous times and all activated without issue.

Yeah, I sold a rooted LG Optimus V a few years back, that was rooted, & the new owner had no problems activating it on his account.
Unless there was some sort of flag on the phone, ex. Non payment or delinquent account, I cannot see a reason it would not activate

Yeah, rooting shouldn't cause any issues. But having a custom ROM on the phone might be a problem.
