Consider crossfire 290s? Good customer cooler of course.
 
AMD arch is better for VR. If you even think you might be interested in buying into a VR headset in 6-12mo, go for a GCN card. I like the $200 price range and below. I bought a R9 380, if VR looks good, I'm buying a 2nd 380. Crossfire scales better in VR, so you want that and not SLI, preferably.

If you want to buy a card like the 980Ti, go for the Fury X instead. It's the same performance, but better designed for VR.
