Sold my GPU. Now I can't decide on a new one...

Hello, how are you?
So, I managed to sell my 290X 4GB.
I had a reference model and it was ok for some time while I was able to do 100% of my gaming with headphones.
Now I cannot use headphones most of the time so the noise of the 290X was killing me...
To keep the card from throttling I had to use a custom fan profile and it got loud!
So I managed to sell it.

Now I don't know what to get.
My main goal is performance and silence!
I don't plan to do a custom wc loop, so the GPU will either have to be aircooled or with an AIO.

My CPU cooler is a Silverstone HE01 and win my custom profile it is quiet.
My current monitor is a 1440p 60hz IPS.
I want to upgrade to 144hz 1440p after the GPU, depending on if I go for Freesync or GSync...

So, my main indecision first is Fury X or 980Ti?

My main concerns about the Fury X:
- has only 4gb.
- can suffer from annoying high pitched pump noise or coilwine...
AMD says they fixed it, but the verdict is still not out on that one.
- can be behind Nvidia as Nvidia support increases on the developers side with gameworks and such...

My main concerns about the 980ti.
- to get a non reference model, it is more expensive than the fury X.
- custom models come with 2 or 3 fans with sizes from 80mm to 100mm. That can get loud.
It is not such a new tech like the fury with HBM.

The fury X can have really good temps and the typhoon fan is really quiet. But if the card suffers from wine or pump noise, it can be worse than an aircooled Ti...

If I go for a 980ti, which one to go for?
- g1
- msi gaming
- classified
- Strix?

Can you help me out with your insight?
Will the fury X pull ahead with future drivers and DX12?
Will HBM pull ahead in the future?
Does a custom 980TI require a custom fan profile to get a good OC and no throttling? How loud do they get?
Is the pump noise really fixed on the Fury?

I just don't know what to do, but while I don't pull the trigger on a GPU, no gaming as the HD4600 doesn't cut it...

Can you help me out?

Thanks.
Cheers!

I'd wait for tests to confirm the pump noise is gone if you go fury.

There are already reviews of aftermarket 980Ti's, some have higher voltage to increase overclocking capacity, but this makes them noisy and also heat up the case more.

Anyway, pick a well reviewed card and buy it from a shop with a good return policy.

If you looking for best and fastest than of course go for G1 GTX 980 Ti or MSI GTX 980 Ti gaming.

IMO, it is better to wait a few weeks to see how the air-cooled Fury does, and then, the Nano.
If you want a temp card, to hold you over until AMD finishes launching the other cards it has, then get a 290x that doesn't have the reference cooler, like this one: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7601/sapphire-radeon-r9-290-review-our-first-custom-cooled-290/4. Those are very quiet compared to what you had before.
DX 12 games won't be out for awhile, so, nobody can say who will win that fight.

i am in a similar boat. i am stuck between zotac gtx 980ti amp extreme ed.(currently with tigerdirect only, newegg's stock is sold out) for $700 you get highest clocks in the market which means no need to manually overclock in near future. other option is fury ofcrs but it is not available readily and initial batch has 'whine' problem. i your budget allows then you can wait for dual fury or evga gtx 980ti hybrid(very rarely available right now)
i am not sure both the cards(in single config.) can push 120hz at 1440p on current and upcoming games. e.g. both of them can't push constant 80fps in witcher 3(esp. in combat scenes). i might be wrong.. but do your research before investing in a new monitor..

Edit: forgot to mention zotac's amp extreme is 2.5 pcie slots wide so sli might be a problem in matx boards.

I'd go with the 980 Ti. If you can find one in stock that EVGA hybrid card should be awesome. Granted the hybrid kit is available separately, and it is compatible with all reference Ti's with the blower cooler.

Otherwise, the custom air cooled versions look great also. The MSI, EVGA, and Gigabyte cards all look good.

IMO, it is better to wait a few weeks to see how the air-cooled Fury does, and then, the Nano.

Why? You know neither of these cards will match or beat the 980 Ti.

Depending on how things go, OP might get a better bang for the buck.
14th isn't that far away for the Fury...

None of the newly launched AMD cards have been particularly good bang for the buck so far. At $550 Fury won't buck that trend unless it's extremely close to Fury X.

Of course, this will change after the inevitable price drop, but that's months not weeks away.

by this logic he should buy this
even 980 ti won't beat this. o_O

on a serious note, you should do a little more research gdourado.
fury is very new many believe that its full potential is not out yet. With dx12 just a month away we should get better insight of how(if) amd's fury will have any considerable boost against nV's 980ti. also, nvidia is not going to sit idle. i am sure they must have developed drivers to unleash gtx cards' performance.

another option is to go sli with 970s or 980s if you have no problem with waiting for sli drivers that come after few days of launch of the game.
subyman is selling his 970 at a super sexy price here grab another one and you can get 970 sli for about 550USD..

i am probably going for zotac amp extreme since i can't find fury x or 980ti hybrid anywhere and its been a month since i have sold my 980. and intel integrated graphics 4600 is not much fun to play with lol

The GTX 980 is a horrible value at the current price compared to the GTX 970 and 980 Ti. IMO, if anyone is considering the GTX 980 they should save a few bucks and go with a 970 or pony up and go with the GTX 980 Ti. No one should buy two GTX 980s in SLI right now at the current MSRP.

The way things will probably go:

1) 980 Ti is a bit better than the FuryX right now.
2) FuryX will possibly be a bit better than the 980 Ti when it has more mature drivers, although there is no guarantee of that.
3) If you plan on keeping the card for longer than a year and a half, the 4GB frame buffer on the FuryX will likely become a bottleneck around that time.

Most reviews are showing the reference, stock clock 980TI vs Fury X (where the 980TI still wins.) A custom 980TI like the MSI Gaming or Gigabyte G1 are heavily OCed from the factory and there is really no comparison in performance at that point. A custom Fury X is not offered. When comparing the price bracket, a custom 980TI is the best "bang for the buck" in the $650-$699 range bar-none.

Voltage may be unlocked on the Fury X in the future, but at this time there are no plans to offer a factory overclocked model or that it will over clock well with voltage by the user. I highly doubt any driver improvements can overcome the sizable lead that a custom 980TI enjoys over the Fury X.

Now if you have special needs such as requiring an AIO or blower, then your options are narrowed.

If 290x performance was alright, something like a MSI or Asus Strixx 970 would offer good performance while being incredibly cool and quiet.Love the hell out of my Strixx after dealing with 7970/670 blowers and mediocre cards like my Zotac 770.

With all fans on my Antec GX500 case on low,the 970 simply can't be heard with my profile and it stays incredibly cool.Good ambient temperatures i hit about 63cel max with 45% fanspeed enabled.

My monitor currently is 1440p 60hz.
I want to get into 1440p 144hz.
Either Freesync or GSync depending on GPU.
Either way, there is still no monitor I enjoy fully.
On the GSync, I like the swift but it's TN. The Acer is IPS but bad build quality.
On Freesync, love the Asus MG but only goes to 90hz Freesync.
Like the benq but it's TN.

So the monitor will have to wait a bit more.

As for GPU, I was thinking about the 980ti.
Been browsing some reviews and was set on the EVGA SC+ ACX witch reviews mention to be very quiet.
But then user reports say that it has to run fans on 70-80% to keep it under 80 degrees while OCing and that it is loud!
So I am more set on the Fury X as it is supposed to be super quiet with the pump issue fixed.
Am I thinking straight?
I would give 10-15 fps of performance in favor of quietness...

Cheers!

Wait until the 14th and see how Air Fury does. Aftermarket 980 Ti will remain in the lead at 1440p so if you're about max performance more so than saving some cash, then you could go for an aftermarket 980 Ti now

@ 1440 the 4GB won't be an issue. The available (V)Ram in consoles isn't going to increase, which is why the current VRAM usage spiked to begin with.

If you look at history, Fury will almost assuredly outperform 980ti/Titan X over time. Look at 7970 vs. 680/770 and 780 ti/Titan vs. 290X/390X. nVidia's recent offerings haven't held up well.
