Ok this is the deal. I sold a car to a couple about a week ago right around the 29th. They paid me cash and said they would get the tags that day. I gave the title to them and signed it over. The wife came back and said there was a problem with were I signed on the title so I went ahead and signed in the appropriate place and she left. I then expected them to pick it up tommorow considering Motor Vehicles closed when she left and she hadne't officially transfered the title yet.

Well she emailed me a couple of days ago telling me she would get tags for the vehicle tommorow. That was the day before yesturday. The car is still sitting in front of my house with no tags (I turned mines in). I have a spare key to the car but since I signed the title over to them I don't want to move it. It's their vehicle but it's parked in front of my house. I don't know the law regarding how long a vehicle can stay without tags in front of the house.

Never mind.

They just came like 2 mins ago and I saw them put new tags and stickers on the vehicle.

It's all good.

I just want if off of my hands.

Yeah, it's rough because until the buyer actually transfers the registration, it's still the seller's liability (meaning you get the parking tickets). That's even if the seller turns in their half of the paperwork. Glad the buyers finally got their stuff taken care of.

Nope. Once you sign over the title, you file a report of sale with the DOL, and then the car is fully the responsibility of the buyer.

In Washington state, you can even do that online.

Not so in Florida, if the buyer doesn't show up the vehicle is still 'yours'. Quite a few cars have been bought just for crimes.

According to the law it's not so easy.

I had a guy buy my Saturn in all cash, said he was going to register it right after. I took him over a month.

Yeah

I called my town police office shortly after making this post. I informed them what was going on. According to them no car can be sitting outside with no plates. They said I was supposed to get a bill of sale. She indicated the signed title is not enough. She said people will buy cars, sign over the title but never register it. They will drive around with bad plates and no insurance and everything will go on the previous owner (Bull Shit). I kind of got worried directly after that.

I called the sellers asking where they were. They said they were picking it up. I witnessed them outside of my house applying brand new tags and stickers onto the tags. Indicating they indeed registered the car.

Well in maryland you must have plates by law which means you must have it registered. But it dosen't neccesarily have to reg in your name. You can simply have bad plates and be driving around on someone's reg. It's illegal.

It's stupid. First time i heard it.

Having the seller and buyer sign a simple bill of sale is always a good idea, but never, ever, ever let a buyer drive off with your plates. Even if you cancel them with the DMV, you could (will be) responsible for any tickets they get (not moving violations, but parking tickets and such).

Glad to see its all cleared up for you, steppinthrax.
