We're gonna setup a little webserver running Solaris 9, and see how it works, and I got the "honor" to set it up.

Of course, I've only been using it for like 1½ days, so I dont know how well it works when push comes to shove yet, but I just thought I'd give my initial impressions.

So far, I must say it seems like Sun have listened to people a bit more than previously.
One nice thing that they really should have done earlier is that SSH is installed and enabeled by default.
Another very nice thing that is definately minor, but still a plus, is that they seem to have implemented some minor improvements in the userland tools, such as the -h switch for commands such as ls, df, etc, along with some other stuff that comes in handy once in a while.

Stuff Im still missing is lsof, or something similar, along with the oh so comfy -z switch for tar.
And of course, they still insist on turning on every damn service in the world by default :(

Oh well, can't have it all, and hopefully, more nice things(not to mention more not so trivial changes) will show up as I use it a bit more. :)

It would be nice if they just got with the way the world seems to be going and include a buttload of the GNU tools with the cd's. I'm kind of tired of going out every time and getting the packages for gnu-tar, gcc, gmake, samba..... the list goes on... every time I install a box that I want to actually do something with.

Well, samba is included from start actually ;)

However, I should mention they STILL wont bundle a c compiler, extremely annoying IMO.
It's a friggin UNIX system for crying out loud, it needs a compiler :|

Servers available to the internet should not have compilers ;)

Anyhow, the packages are out there. Every OS out there starts too much turned on by default.

I didn't mean it should be part of the core packages, but really, when the setup model you pick is called "Core + Development" or something like that, I'd expect to get a compiler.
Oh well, at least Sunfreeware had gcc binaries for Sol9/SPARC.

Just as a note, we just noticed that solaris 9 ships gcc 2.95.3 on the discs someplace... that's really nice considering I would not trust 3.1 as far as I can throw the disk it's on, and I have a good arm ;)

check it... Sun's Sol9 page
