in order to expand my skillset, i am planning on creating a home network starting with a solaris 10 server.

are there hardware limitations i need to be aware of? i tend to bring "obsolete" hardware home from my current job (production graphic/CAD environment so it's not _really_ obsolete), and i'd appreciate any assistance and advice.

thank you.

Yes, check their hardware compatibility list. Solaris x86 has always had a very limited set of hardware it would work on, but I know this has been expanding with OpenSolaris and the newer Opteron systems Sun sells.

Cool.
I recommend use the latest bits of "Solaris Express" or "Solaris Express Community Release", both support more devices and have more features (ZFS).
Unless you want to strictly duplicate your production enviroment.

See differences here:

Google search for "Solaris HCL".
Solaris doesn't support nearly as many devices as Linux does, most "mainstream" devices are supported though.

Downloading solaris 10 as I read this. Yikes 5 or six CDs. How did it work out for your Batchofiles? ZFS looks slick, something new under the sun....
