Solar System=Milky Way Galaxy?

My friend thinks that our solar system (our sun and 9 planets) is the Milky Galaxy. But I've always been under the impression that our solar system is one of many in the Milky Way Galaxy. What defines a galaxy?

a galaxy is a cluster of stars with relatively litte distance between them, revolving around a central point.

the solar system is just one system in the millions in our galaxy.

if you go out to a rural area on a clear night you can see it, sorta looks like a cloud that streteches all the way across the sky

hahaa your friend is lacking some very basic knowledge. a galaxy consists of uncountable star/star systems.

I love the photo of the Milky Way that is posted on the Luminous Landscape. Lots of really nice photography on there, and lots of info too.

**Edit: Son of a... that's not the photo that used to be on there. It got a lot more compressed and just looks like crap now:disgust: It used to be really sweet.

Our sun is just one out of 200.000.000+ stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. And there is a lot of galaxies (I would say at least
100.000.000 but this is very conservative estimate and I will check that)...

At least 200 billion stars in The Milky Way (some recent estimate claims much more, about 400 billions), your number was about 1000 times short 😉

its all kind of bind boggling when you think about it....billions of stars to a galaxy, millions if not billions of galaxies in the universe....how could there NOT be life out there?

So is the Alpha quadrant and the Delta quadrant in the same galaxy? or different?

Same Galaxy; ours. It has 4 quadrents, or quarters.

I say the same thing about my ability to get a date.

OK, I was just 1000 short.....
There is at least 100 billions od stars, just like our sun in the Milky Way alone....
Link
And there are at least 10 billion of large and 100 billion of small known galaxies
Source
Number of stars in the visible universe = 2000 billion billion......

And we're part of a vast interplanetary system
Stretching seven hundred billion miles long.
With nine planets and a sun; we think the Earth's the only one
That has life on it, although we could be wrong.
Across the interstellar voids are a billion asteroids
Including meteors and Halley's Comet too.
And there's over fifty moons floating out there like balloons
In a panoramic trillion-mile view.

And still it's all a speck amid a hundred billion stars
In a galaxy we call the Milky Way.
It's sixty thousand trillion miles from one end to the other
And still that's just a fraction of the way.
'Cause there's a hundred billion galaxies that stretch across the sky
Filled with constellations, planets, moons and stars.
And still the universe extends to a place that never ends
Which is maybe just inside a little jar!

It's a great big universe
And we're all really puny
We're just tiny little specks
About the size of Mickey Rooney.
It's big and black and inky
And we are small and dinky
It's a big universe and we're not.

"It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination."
