Some of these things are old, some are new and some are plainly weird. I was wondering if there are any good everyday solar powered gadgets that folks around here are happy with (more than the first week) and can recommend them as a substitute. For example, I can't have a solar powered keyboard, because I have my computer in a dark room with not enough light to keep it charged for as long as I need (plus I don't believe that the actual properties of such keyboard are at the same level of quality as some of the better keyboards). Chargers are another thing. I need my stuff ready during the day (obviously) so I charge them during the night. And when it comes to outdoor lamps or lanterns, I only use them twice a year. I don't I am the target audience although I would like to be.

So what kind of solar powered stuff do you use?

The only solar powered item I used on a regular basis was a battery charger that plugged into a cigarette lighter. We had a truck (at work) that was only used occasionally.

I've looked into chargers for our Emergency Management office. Something to charge cell and satellite phones as well as run a laptop. Basically, for occasional use, they are OK. But for all day use at an emergency, you need a generator.
