Solar Panels on Every House

Solar Panels on Every House would save the country millions in of barrels of oil

They should make it a law or a major tax break or something

News flash: There are already tax breaks for installing solar panels on your house.

Anyway, IIRC, solar panels are in short supply at the moment, making them more expensive (basic supply and demand).

Also, just so you know, the U.S. pumps enough oil on its own to feed the housing oil market, so it is cars and oil burning power plants that push usage over the U.S.'s pumping capacity. Nuclear power would solve the oil plants (but not cars).

I was thinking about this also

but you have to take into consideration solar panels are very expensive than I believe you need batteries to store.

Yes, there already are tax breaks for it. But until the efficiency goes up and the cost goes down people just aren't going to do it in large numbers.

I have an idea! After we install solar panels on every house, we should cut down all the trees that may be blocking out any sunlight that could be used for solar power.

😉

if i got solar panel on my house it would take 10 years for them to pay for themself with the tax break. They should have a tax break to pay for 100% so it doesnt take 10 years to pay for it self

im sure the people that run the oil companies are doing everything in their power to keep the production of solar panels and development of alternative fuel vehicles to a minimum, if there was a real crisis the government would have already came up with ideas on alternative energy/fuels and even higly efective solar panels. The united states prolly has the best resources to do almost anything and the brighest people to support it all, so if there was a real need it would have already happened. but the CEO's and stockholders of the oil companies are happy with the way things are so im sure nothing will be done to reduce our depence on oil anytime soon.

Wow, if only everyone could afford hte start up costs!

If we all started using solar panels in place of roofing tiles, think we'd all be happier🙂. Except when the snow comes, but then we'll have laws to shovel our roofs.

First off I would like to say,as an operator of the largest solar arrays ever flown in space, that as a primary source of power, solar power completely sucks.

However as a supplemental source of power it would be awesome to have the panels integrated into all new homes. If you picked up a plugin-able hybrid you could charge the car from the solar panels during the day further reducing your gas usage.

I'd also like to see someone produce an emergency power source using collapsible solar panels, wind turbines, and batteries which could be used by hospitals, police and fire stations during disasters like Katrina. After the disaster setup the panels and turbines on the roof (they make collapsible 400 watt wind turbines) connect em to the batteries and have a KW or 2 to power radios, satellite phones, refrigerators for medicine, etc.

I think the power company should subsidize 50% of it. We would all have solar panels installed and hooked into the power grid effectively making the power company our battery. On sunny days we'd use less power and feed any excess into the power grid. It's similar to how distributed computing work. We're distributing the power generation from one central location to thousands of other locations.

Maybe they could be built with a defroster like on the rear windshield of your car. 😉

My house already has something like that. I have large steel panels that heat up and melt the snow at the edge of the roof, it slides off and as long as your roof is steep, the rest follows.

well, in Spokane WAthere isn't much sunlight, but with global warming maybe we'll get more 😛 But people in southern states prolly should get those panels

I'd put solar panels on my house in a second if it wasn't going to cost tens of thousands of dollars. Even with the rebates, tax breaks, etc, it still insanely expensive. And it takes so long to make our money back it just doesn't make sense unless ou'll be there for like 15+ years.

Can solar panels withstand hail without damage? Would they be covered by home owners insurance in the chance they are damaged by hail?

If so, would they eventually pay for themselves from the reduced electricity bills?

Friend of mine does have something to heat up his pool via the sun. It's not really solar power but his pump sends the water up to his roof through black tubing that snakes back and forth through it. When the sun is hot enough, it heats the water as it passes through all the tubing. He never has to pay to heat his pool and it works well.

When people say that it takes X years to break even on solar panels, does that factor in batteries? Is that how the power is stored for them? If so, how long do those last generally?
