I, for one, an excited to hear that someone gives a rats ass about the genre.

Seamless Entertainment Announces New Space Combat Game, SOL: Exodus

Experienced team bringing back the glory of classic gaming genre; new video trailer reveals mysterious storyline.

AUSTIN, Texas, July 20, 2011—Seamless Entertainment™, an independent game developer located in Austin, Texas, is setting its sights on re-energizing a faded genre once known for legendary hits like Wing Commander® and FreeSpace™. Seamless unveiled its first trailer today for SOL: Exodus™, the company’s 3D space-action game. The game, currently in development, will be a downloadable title with a planned release later this year. The trailer is currently available at http://www.YouAreSOL.com.

SOL: Exodus will deliver epic space battles featuring enormous capital ships, hordes of spacecraft and beautifully rendered planetary battlegrounds in an action-packed presentation reminiscent of iconic sci-fi TV shows and movies.

The Seamless team is led by game industry veterans Dan Magaha (Firaxis Games/2K/NCsoft) and Chris Stockman, design director on the mega-hit Saints Row for Xbox 360.

“With SOL: Exodus, players will enjoy gameplay staples of the genre such as dogfighting and engaging giant capital ships,” said Creative Director Stockman. “But we‘ve also introduced some unique special abilities for added mission depth and interactivity. I’ll be talking more about those as we get closer to launching later this year.”

In SOL: Exodus, players will assume the role of fighter pilot in a battle for the survival of the human race, commanding their multi-purpose tactical fighter in battles across the most recognizable landmarks in our Solar System. Together with a squadron of wingmen, they will dogfight in the rings of Saturn, engage enormous capital ships around Neptune, thwart a trap in the chaotic, intense atmosphere of Jupiter, and much more!

“It’s not just a coincidence that this project is coming together in Austin, where the Wing Commander series was born back in the 1990s,” said Studio Director Magaha. “Austin has really become a hub for determined indie developers. I think we’ve got some of that maverick personality in this team; we’re just driven by the goal of making this game great.”

They need a graphic designer on their team or some experienced artists at least :) Their game's logo looks like some art student just discovered the bevel and embossed effect in Photoshop.

I think this goes down as the worst trailer I have ever seen.

The thread title gave me some hope, the bumpf made me beam and some mixed hope... trailer absolutely shattered any illusions I had.

Might be better when it's done.

Yeah - not especially excited about the trailer. Really short on details.

But you have to admit - most games with really kickass trailers turn out to be crappy and absolutely NOTHING like the trailer presented.

This fact alone gives me some semblance of hope.

It all comes down to three things.
The story.
The fighters themselves.
The weaponry on the cap ships.

Freespace got all three right, as did the first three Wing Commander games.

I wonder if they'll let you wander your ship and interact w/ crewmembers and wingmen like in Wing Commander.

Imo it made you feel a lot more vested in their survival and just broke up the whole "briefing->mission->briefing->mission->cutscene->briefing->mission" that was pretty common for the genre.

Most games with really crappy trailers tend to look exactly as they're presented and suck. That fact alone shatters all my hope : p

Oh well, at least you're better off going in with your hopes dismally low rather than inflated beyond the stratosphere only to have them crash down to one of Dante's circles in the end.

Glad to see someone is at least delving back into this genre. Will have to check it out once it's out. As for the trailer, just looks like that is probably the intro movie in the game. They SHOULD put some gameplay vids up I would think...if not, then yes..this game probably is suck.

Got me to thinking though....

IF the sun was really going to explode, we'd be screwed. Even if we had the ships to move everyone off the planet, I doubt we'd ever get far enough away in time to avoid the blast radius. And no, Jupiter and Neptune are not far enough away...
