SOHO Router that handles 50mbps through wan port?

I just got a high tier of broadband service that says I get 50mbps down and 10mbps up. However, I currently use a Linksys WRV54G and the throughput on the router is at most 8mbps.

I see the promised speeds when I directly connect my pc but not when going behind the router. Since I want to continue connecting more than one computer at my location (2 active users 1 parially), what would be a good router to get to support the 50 mbps down and 10 mbps up?

My budget is $200.

my soekris can get pretty close or beat it depending on the configuration

Your best be is a PC running linux; iirc an astaro box with a 1.6Ghz p4 can crank out 655Mbps:p

linux box ++

if you arn't much of a linux hacker, try smoothwall

Natting/filtering in Linux is basic stuff, so you don't need a beefy box. tbh, a P2 with 128 megs of ram would be fine, as long as you arn't running X full time.

goose,

how is your soekris setup? i need a new firewall/router solution, and am looking for something a littlle more robust than your off the shelf soho router. ASL is awesome. i love the webgui for it. but i couldn't put it into use. needed to save on electricity and lack of space in college apartment :(

a barebones astaro box isnt gonna pull that much electricity...not like its a quad xeon. and as for space...well...a mid size atx isnt that big. ive run astaro v4 on something as slow as a cellery 400 with plenty of headroom.

ok, i'll have to check what version i downlowded, but i think it was either v4 or v5, i can't remember, i'l lprobably have to get a new home user license.

its gonna be an old hp pc that is p 2 400mhz, with 256 MB of ram. the pc isn't used for anything else. At one point, i was trying to evaluate smoothwall, m0n0wall, or Astaro as viable router/firewall solutions. I liked Astaro, but at the time wasn't able to fully use it.

I think I will bring the pc to my apartment, shove it underneath my desk and hook it into a switch. I'm sure its gonna be fun configuring all the firewall rules for my XBOX and TiVo, and all the apps on my pc and my roommates pc.

Stick to those and perhaps give pfsense a try. It is a m0n0wall derivative designed to scale much better.

Keep in mind that soekris boxes are a heavy invest, ent with mine costing over $300.

considering that a router is something you are using 24/7...id say that 300 bucks is well worth it....

most any P2/P3 box with a decent amount of ram and load up M0n0wall or your choice of software with a pair of good quality nics, "Intel" or such and you will be good to go without a very large investment.

If you are like most ppl here you prob have most of the parts you need in your collection of old/spare parts.

if you are looking to spend a few dollars, i would reccomend a mini-itx computer, which can be made to be completely solid state using a compact flash card instead of a hard drive
as for the firewall software, i use and like IPcop
i used smoothwall for a while, but found that the log files eventually consume the hard drive

may i recommend pfsense. it is based on m0n0wall and is better for faster pcs
