Software upscaling?

I have my LCD in the living room connected via optical/HDMI from my PC. If I have a standard avi movie, is there software available to upscale to 1080p? My DVD player upscales, but Im looking to get rid of it. Im not sure if upscaling is a hardware function, software, or both?

Set your video card resolution to 1920x1080, play the video full screen, and that's it. 🙂

Bingo. It might not be the best quality depending on the software you use, but just by maximizing the video to fill the screen, you are upscaling it.

Cool thanks. Thats all I needed. I generally use VLC or media player classic for displaying on my TV, and resolution in Nvidia control panel is already at 1920x1080.

Thanks again.

It depends on the level of videophile you are. There are a whole series of tests to determine the quality of your upscaling, but for general consumer use the advice you have is sound and solid.
