How difficult is to upgrade the software of a Catalyst 6509? I only have to upgrade the supervisor mod and the mfcs2 mod or the chassis
need a software upgrade too?

you'll need to upgrade both...or one....or the other. they kindof run separate OS depending on how you set it up. check the TAC top issues page on www.cisco.com. lots of info there.

upgrading is not hard, it is dealing with a completely new set of bugs that is. :)

One caveat - I'd only upgrade one at a time, then let it run. Whenever you're making changes to a network, ALWAYS only change one thing at once. If you do both at once, who knows where the problem is - The Supervisor, the MFSC or something between them?

I'd start with the Supervisor module, then update the MFSC a week or so later, unless you're in a big hurry.

I'm asking because someone told me that upgrade the switch software it's a little bit of difficult and if something went worng I have send the whole unit to Cisco for get it fix. How true is that?

That's a start. However told you the story about sending the switch back to cisco was full of it. I'll second Garion's rec of doing sup first and let it run for a week or two then do msfc.

Read all release notes on the versions you're install, especially the supported hardware and caveats sections.

good luck! you should be able to have two images on the sup and msfc that way you can roll back simply by changing a "boot system" command.
