My notebook is an a64 3200 DTR system, however, the summer heat of Phoenix isn't exactly being friendly towards it, and it keeps overheating to the point of instant shutdown. I've used Radlinker to downclock and lock the MR 9600 to 100/100, but it still overheats on CPU intensive tasks.

Anyone know of a tweak program, or a way to do it within windows, to underclock the A64 in software? I checked the bios, there wasn't anything there to under or overclock the CPU.

i think its just bad airflow my friend has a problem with his every 2 hours it would turn off from getting too hot when we did anything intense.

Maybe I'll pick up one of those notebook coolers I've seen at BB. Anyone know how well they work?

I thought it was enabled by default? How would I enable, using XP Pro?

Edit - According to this, this, and this. , its enabled and working. CPU clock speed does vary.

As I understand CnQ, it will bring the CPU clock back up to full speed when the load is increased. I need a way to lock it at an underclocked speed for the duration of the summer.

what happens if you select MAX Battery in power schemes?

for C&Q to work you have to install their cpu driver, you can get it at amd's website.

Question: Is the driver from AMD's site the same as the one that MS provides through windows update? I tried both, and XP sees them as the same driver, however, the one from AMD's site appears to have a much lower revision number than the one from MS.

You need to use the driver from AMD's website.

Got it installed now. We shall see whether it makes a difference or not. The machine was overheating in SC last night.

I'm not paying for a few more degrees on the AC. :p
