There's no way for software to tell. As far as the video card is concerned, every pixel was working fine when it shuttled it off to the monitor. It's like a blown tire in a car: the engine will still run just as fast. It doesn't realize it's not going anywhere.

I found the easiest way to detect screwed up pixels is to put up a completely black screen. That'll let you see any stuck in white, green, red or blue. Then, put up a completely white screen, which'll let you see completely dead pixels. This is how I discovered a lone dead pixel (stuck white) on one of my laptops.

And just a note: at 1600x1200 it starts to get really difficult to tell if pixels are dead. My laptop was that resolution, and I didn't notice the pixel for about a month after owning it. It was so small that, in general, I barely ever noticed it.

There is a small utility that you can run to check for dead pixels by rotating all RGB colours on your screen. I forgot the link, but do a search on the net, or PM me with your email addy and I can send it to you.

who needs software? Just open and close a blank IE window, then play a game or watch a movie. Any dead pixels wll stick out like a sore thumb.

Thanks for the Info...I wasn't sure if it could be done by software...the only reason I asked is because I didn't know if there was a specific test you could run to see if you had any....right now I don't notice anything and it looks so much nicer than my old CRT monitor...

I wonder how I actually looked at the screen as long as I did, it is like night and day...when you compare the two

thanks again guys

along the same lines as the falling tree in the woods question on whether it makes any noise...

if you can't see a dead pixel, does it even exist? You shouldn't need software to tell you this, even if some program did exist.
