Software to do a HD scan for bad sectors?

I, on occasion, buy used hard drives from ppl on the net (eg. AT FS/FT forums) and i want to be able to scan for bad sectors.. anyone have any software that will do this? I need it to work for notebook drives too, thanks

chkdsk should find and report bad sectors...

Also formatting the drive (not using the ?quick format? option) will scan the drive for bad sectors and mark them so the OS does not try to use them.

The manufacturers of each brand of HD have tools to do all kinds of diagnostics. Check their websites.
