Software to bypass "Copy Controlled" CD's

This really pissed me off the other day. I bought the new Air CD not realizing that it is copy controlled... of course there was
no sticker on the front or anything to tell me this.

I am anal when it comes to piracy. I am strongly anti-warez... I have all my CD's ripped and put on my file server for backup
and convenience purposes. I also bring CD's to work so I can listen to them on my computer. Unfortunately copy controlled CD's
won't play in a computer CD-ROM!

Are there ways to get around it? I'm going to send an E-mail to the band and hope for a response.

Two thoughts.

First the thread is probably going to get locked, asking to circumvent piracy controls is a no-no regardless if the 'target' is software or music.

That said, I *completely* understand your position. I have a very large mp3 collection, and everyone is always amazed to learn they are rips of cd's I own sitting in a cabinet (which thankfully take much less space now that I just keep the cover and cd in a bunch of those 200 cd holders and not each individual jewel case). The best recommendation I have is to return the CD, it's mislabeled (Pioneer is suing to ensure that protected cd's are labled as such as they don't follow the cd standard). If we buy this new format, it won't change, if we refuse to (or return them when we find out) we have some chance of this changing.

My 2 cents 😉

Personally I don't think this is a lockable offense... maybe I should rename the thread so make it a target for discussion
on "Copy Control" technology.

I still keep all my CD's on display (500 of em), because I like having the jewels, inserts and artwork. I also have a discman that
I listen to music with as well. Music is my life! Well, that and computers 😛. I want this CD, and I probably would have been ok
if I couldn't rip it, but the fact that it doesn't play in a CD-ROM is ridiculous!

I'm probably going to just play it from our Denon mini system and plug it straight into the line-in port and do a large track
for the whole CD.

btw, there is a "Copy Controlled" label on the back of the CD. It's very small near the bottom, and I wouldn't have seen it
unless I really scanned it.

Sigh, I can only imagine how small it is (and how many designers worked on it to ensure it would be easily missed!)

You might try ripping it on a linux box or a mac if you haven't already. They're immune to a lot of the copy-protection crap.

I do all my ripping in FreeBSD so I will see how that goes... I'll post my results.

If you do it in FreeBSD already, then it probably won't make any difference. It's just that since the *nix OS's access the cdrom differently than windows, some of the protection schemes that works in windows won't in a *nix environment.
