software to back up dvds?

human2k, hey dude I don't see why you waste your time posting a lock pic, his question was a legitimate one. It's not illegal to make backups of your own dvd's, vcr's, music cd's, software or any other material that you own. By law you have the right to do this.

It goes even further than that, on Friday a Judge said that the "noncommercial home use recording of material broadcast over the public airwaves was a fair use of copyrighted works and did not constitute copyright infringement"

In other words you can record every movie, song, event, show and actually anything that has ever been broadcasted over TV, Radio or Satellite as long as it's for non-commercial home or private use.

Asking for a software that does this is perfectly ethical and legal.

I have never known ANYONE that actually backs up dvd's to SVCD that they own.

I do, if you want your media backed up to a PC, it makes sense doesn't it? I don't like VCD, and DIVX is ok, but quality isn't up par. I have an external 120 gig HD which I back up my DVD's to SVCD, I have about 40 movies on it right now, no menus, no extras just the main flicks. works well. I find SVCD eaiser to edit and mess with (if you have to)

but to each his own...

Your assumptions of what you believe are irrelevant to the question being asked and then for someone to suggest that a thread be locked on their own assumptions is thoughless and inconsiderate. Surely the Anandtech community is above this...

But then again we have people that say things like "Ding! Ding! Ding! and Welcome to Another Episode of JackAss!"

Your right, ripping to SVCD would be a headache, since most of the time it would take several SVCD's to show a complete movie that you can see with just 1 DVD.

However, I do rip and encode some of my DVD movies into DivX format so I can:

1) keep my kids grubby fingers off them.
2) put them on my kids computers, they can watch them anytime on their own
3) take them with me on my laptop instead of all the original DVD's.
4) install them on my "media" computer that is connected to my entertainment center, mostly because I'm lazy and I don't want to have to get up and change discs all the time, but also for #1 above, including my own grubby fingers. 🙂

I've been playing around with GordianKnot, but haven't got it quite figured out yet (guess I should read the tutorial).

Now if you had a DVD burner, hmmm.... 🙂
