Software that will write the contents of a directory to a text file?

I'm trying to find some software that will write the contents (filenames) of a directory to a text file. I'm searching google, etc, now, and tried searching on here. I know I've seen people ask about it before, but I can't find any of the previous threads.
 
theres this little known program that comes with every windows or dos machine:
dir > test.txt

now, really, I dont know if this is what your looking for. But maybe it'll help 😀
