Software sound level meter?

I'm looking for a prog to monitor sound levels using a sound card and a microphone. A prog called Cooledit is supposed to do that, but costs too much. Plus the demo version is partially disabled.

Any alternatives available? Anybody use Cooledit?

Forget Cooledit, they were bought about by Adobe and it now costs around $300.

Not sure what you're trying to do, if you want to only record sounds above a certain level try scanrec..

Hey thanks for the links. All I want to do here is get a simple dB reading from various devices....maybe monitor ambient dB levels around the house. I have a good Sennhauser mic, and a good sound card. I sure don't want to pay $300 for the prog, but I'm open for suggestions.

The problem is I want to check noise sources under 50dB. Most cheap hardware meters won't go below 50dB.

Even with expensive meters you're still going to find it hard to get one that measures decibels below 30db. A cheap microphone will not work either.
