This problem totally mystifies me. This has now happened 4 times since I got my Promise FastTrak66, Santa Cruz, and ATI Radeon 64MB VIVO. I got them all about the same time so it could be any one of them.
The first time, it occured in Win2K when running 3D Mark 2001. The system would be running it then all of a sudden the monitor would go to sleep. Nothing responded, not even reset/power. Even after turning it off on the PS the system would not come back on. The power will come on (and all fans) but nothing works. The hard disks don't even spin up if connected to the IDE controller. The MSI LEDs that tell you where it is in the boot process usually said 4 red (power on). Sometimes it got one green but I would lock there. I reseated everything. I even pulled the entire board out of the case and tried it with nothing plugged in.
Finally it started working when nothing changed from the last try. I put it back together and it worked untill I ran 3D Mark 2001 again. Then the same thing happened. Now it has started happening when loading Win ME sometimes. It happens at the same times which makes it seem like software. But, why can't my mother board power up? I have tried playing with everything I can think of. I have unplugged it and removed the CMOS battery to no avail. I tried letting it sit for hours. It seems like I just have to play with it (lots of power cycles) before it starts working again.
When it works, it works fine. There are no instabilities. One thing I think I should mention is when I got the Promise FastTrak66, right after installing it my SB Live! decided it was a Video Card. The Live thinks it is a video card no matter what system it is in now. I wonder if something on the MB and the Live! got damaged when I installed the Fasttrak.
Does this sound like a conflict or software problem? Should I RMA the MB if possible? (anyone know MWaves warranty?) System specs are in my system profile.
