...and it was colder than an ice cube? Whats going on here? Is it safe the assume that the software is wrong about the temp? (It's the ASUS monitor that came with my K7V)

Uh-huh, I knew it was Asus ;)

I remember reading somewhere that Asus boards had a prob with the diode (or whatever the component is) that detects the temp, reporting a much higher temp. I also think I recall something about a bios fix.

Speaking of HOT CPU's...
I installed my P3-450 (without any heatsink), in my system to see if my 550E was cooked.
The system booted and loaded Windows fine. But less than 30 seconds after the desktop came up, everything just froze. I (Duh, look at the pretty puppies), reached in just to check the CPU. Well I checked it all right! I touched the P3 "slug", then yanked my hand back as fast as I could!
It was, shall we say, slightly warm to the touch :Q
I had a blister on my finger for several days from that.
I vow here and now...
I WILL NEVER, EVER, INSTALL A CPU AGAIN WITHOUT SOME KIND OF A HEATSINK!

Ok, you can start now ;)

To the best of my knowledge, both the Asus K7M and K7V mobos with Slot A do not have an embedded CPU temp sensor. They rely on installing the optional P2T cable which connects to a tap on the mobo. Without that, the CPU temp in Asus probe is meaningless . . . it isn't reading anything and should be disabled.

Asus PC Probe is terribly unreliable. Back when I had a P5A-B with my K6-2, it used to tell me every hour or so that it was running at 538 C. It doesn't know what it's talking about. Speaking of heat, someone asked me how bad it is to install an Athlon without any thermal compound between it and the heatsink. I didn't know what to tell him. Is there a big temp difference?

Yep, I have the K7V and you have to install a p2t sensor to get cpu temp, so if you don't have that, it doesn't mean anything. It can only check your motherboard's temp.

If it was really 200C, you wouldn't be reading that value from your rig ;). It's probably the incorrect temp sensor. I would use the free MotherBoard Monitor utility. Check on their site as to w/c sensors to use to monitor CPU temp and system for your respective motherboard brand and model.

Everyone is sure to disagree with me on this but i noticed no difference in temps with thermal compound on the heatsink. I suppose if i bought the expensive stuff instead of the stuff that comes with the vos i might have seen a difference. Who knows?

In a "perfect world", we wouldn't need heatsink compound. In "that" world, every CPU face and every heatsink would be perectly flat. They would mate up like they were "one".
