software sales question

Well since my work went under they're selling off the software on their machines. all we have left now is a SBS 2003 that they bought in oct/novemberish. The thing is I don't know if it was ever activated. They were werking off a 180 day trial, and I don't know if they ever upgraded the license off the trial. the box is now the owners xp machine, and no way to tell. I'm curious how to tell if it was ever activated. and if it was if theres something we need to do before we can sell it?

Theres no risk, just need to know for licensing what needs to be done. They just want to recoup some of the cash that they paid for the OS or trade it off since there is no use for a server OS anymore, but not sure how to sell used software.

now I gotcha.

Umm, if you have access to the IDs, there may be a way to call MS and have them verified. That would probably be the simplest course of action. I guess since the company is out of business, MS couldn't really sue them for anything. There may be an online Product key check, too. I'm sure MS has SOME way of determining these things. Just search their site and find out...
