software reporting ultra high fan speeds

PC Alert III, the cooling utility that was bundled with my MSI K7 Master reports 160,000 rpm for one of my case fans. The fan appears to be working properly. what might the cause of this false alarm?

I'm not really familiar with your MSI setup, but this is a pretty common problem with various reporting software, it's nothing to worry about, obviously, if your fan was running that fast, it would self destruct and take your whole computer with it.
Try another software package such as Motherboard monitor or Sisoft Sandra and see what happens.
