Was looking at Streets and Trips 2009 and was wondering how a laptop setup compares to something standalone like a Garmin? I already have the laptop and can borrow a usb GPS device so from a cost standpoint, it would be cheaper, but does it have equal or better features than a standalone?

I know the standalone is a lot more compact, which is a nice plus.

Thanks!

I tried using a laptop GPS for a while, but ultimately it was too much of a PITA to turn on the car, boot up the laptop, load up the software, etc versus just turn on the Garmin and go. Also, I didn't buy a laptop mount, so it was ridiculous to keep looking over into the passenger seat for directions.

Depends what though. My Garmin Mobile XT on my Nokia N82 is awesome. Sure I like using my friend's Gamin Nuvi 250W a lot more but hey I can do everything except without touchscreen capabilities

Cant speak for a laptop based solution, but I had been running gps via my phone for over the past year. I used Garmin XT mobile, Tomtom 6&7, and iguidance 4. All worked decently, but recently got a mio C520 and took my first trip with it last weekend. Now, I definetly would choose the stand alone unit over my phone any day, its so much more conveinient.

Convenience matters a great deal. Can't be driving around with a laptop on your passenger's lap, it tends to piss them off.

i use google maps mobile on my blackberry, and a tomtom GO 720 - google maps, while convenient in many situations, can't compare to a standalone tomtom unit while driving. the spoken turn-by-turn navigation is key, and the fact that you mount in on the windshield is much safer than repeatedly checking a phone.
