Software for display info on Plasma TV

Do you guys know what software does corporate usually use to display info on big plasma TV for public to view it? I don't know about other countries and big cities. However, I do usually see this kind of thing in Hotel's lobby, where the is a plasma / LCD TV on the wall there displaying info with text, images and also sometime video. Do they use special software to display it for easy input data and updating? Just my curious wanna to know about it. I guess big city in US should be using far more advanced technology. Thanks.
