For reasons mysterious, Photoshop 5.5 has stopped working on my Win 7 machine. It doesn't even want to reload from the CD. So, while I'm working that out, I was wondering if there might be a better approach to doing what I am trying to do which is clean up pencil and ink line art scans. The tools I used in Photoshop were mostly the erasure, smudge tool, and magic wand. Adobe's website makes figuring out which modern version of Photoshop does what all but impossible. Any suggestions?

I do that in Gimp, but pretty much the same tools as you're using. There may be a better way, but I know very little about image manipulation.

Thanks. I hadn't tried Gimp in the last three or four years. It has improved a lot. So far it seems to be doing the trick.

I see you started using GIMP before I got an opportunity to give a second recommendation. Keep up the good work

Scans produce bitmap images. They can also be cleaned up manually using Windows Paint.
