software for bluray

Just ordered a blu ray player.

I use Klite and VLC but what are suggestions for good software? It is only play not rw,

Legally? PowerDVD, Total Media Theatre, WinDVD and Mac Player can all do it easily.

The best way is waiting for a sale or a good deal on those.

Many video players can play the main movie, but in order to get menus and access to the extra features, you need software that has paid the license fee (several listed above). Because they had to pay the fees, they're not cheap.

thats bull shit, how retarded. Why do DVD players not work like that?

$$$$, duh.

It's Sony's baby and they are VERY good at complicating anything media related. That's why I threw out anything with the Sony label on it a couple of years ago .

The workaround is using something like MakeMKV and playing the ripped .mkv file.

Some standalone players cost less than the combined cost of the Blu-ray drive and the commercial software to play it, but what is done is done.

do they offer anything over VLC?

Copy protection.

And I'm not just talking about encryption. Even if you can decrypt the Blu-Ray (there's even a VLC plugin for that), many newer titles include additional forms of copy protection, such as requiring BD-J code to be run to get a proper scene ordering.

I bit the bullet and got the latest version of CyberLink Power DVD. Plays all my Blu-rays. No mess. Saves me a shitload of time.
If i didn't have it: Ripping, converting, fucking around with decode packs. Oh fuck that.

Now that I agree with, unless you happen to have a lot of spare time for ripping/decoding/converting, its just so much easier to plop the disc in the drive and press play...

(not that there aren't legitimate reasons for ripping, converting etc. so long as its for personal use only)
