woops. here's the real post

I have about 40 gigs of hard drive space used, and i'd actually like to back it up to cd-r's.

Any ideas what softwarwe would make images of my drives in nice compressed 650mg files that would span across many cd-r's (i know i might need a spindle of them, but oh well)

norton ghost doesn't seem to let me specify the size of my images (that i can tell)

i don't know of anything else at the moment

thanks!

I tried using my CDRW to backup my system for several months, but I finally got sick and tired of shuffling a dozen CDRs everytime I wanted to make a full backup. I finally broke down and bought a tape drive.

From Ghost 2000 manual:

Spanned image files:
Spanned image files are similar to size-limited, multi-segment image files.
The difference is that each segment file (or span) of the image file is
limited by the actual volume size of the media the image is being saved to.
This allows you to specify a drive and file name and let Norton Ghost sort
out when to request another volume or location for the remaining data. For
example, this is very useful when using ZIP, JAZ, LS120 Superdisk, CD-R/
RW drives, and other drive types.

Make sure that Ghost will work with your CDRW drive, check Norton's website for a compatability list.

The latest version of Drive Image (4.0) is also supposed to support spanning backup
to CD; I haven't tried it myself yet.

I don't know what types of files you have filling that 40G, but the bigger problem
I see with backing up such a large amount of data in an image format, is that
most of it could be information that you may want to access directly from the
CD, instead of having to read thru one or more image files to find that one
MP3 that you want to play back.

overmars, thanks for the link, i'm checking it out now

cquinn, i'm not worried about searching for individual files in these backups , i just really think it's a good idea for me to finally have a copy of everything in case the worst ever happened.

i might have to check out Drive Image too, thanks

but does anyone know if norton ghost will work on windows 2000 ntfs5 drives? and if so, what version of ghost? 2001?
