Software Firewall with a Linksys Router?

Is it necessary or a good idea to run a software firewall such as Zone Alarm with a Linksys Cable Route? I have a cable connection. Was wondering if I should use one to block things from leaving my computer in case something got through by email or something. If so, what do you recommend and was wondering if you can set the programs up to just search things going out of my computer and just let the Router check things coming in? Would that take some processing off the computer?
