I was reading a tweaking site and they mentioned software that will cool your cpu temps and it gave a link to a program called cpuidlepro6 it works great! it dropped my cpu temps by 20 degrees F. my cpu now has an idle temp of 75. The only thing is it is a 30 day trial, are there other programs available that are freeware? Thanks much

also does the prog show your temps? If so compare to a different prog like mdm or speedfan just to make sure its not bs

it's approx 10 degrees C, no it relies on mdm which it gives you a link to download it but you have to install it separately. I also use Asusprob which was supplied with my mobo and it confirms the temperature as well as physical thermometers that I have in my case which are 3 or 4 degrees F higher but do confirm the drop in temp

10c is impossible with air cooling.

That program is "pullin your chain"

I don't see how software can make you run cooler unless that program just throttles down your cpu usage, in that case its possible, but you will lose performance.

well apparently it throttles down the cpu when your pc is idle so it works closely with windows, but if I put a full load on the cpu with seti the temperature jumps right back up again, but I think it's pretty good anyway because the majority of the time my pc isn't doing much of anything so it might as well run a little bit cooler.

Software coolers have been around a long time. The best one was RAIN :). It worked great. But they only really worked well on 98-95 systems. NT based systems already have the HLT command to shut off certain parts of the processor when not in use at idle. :)

ok well this leads me to my original question: What other types of cooling software are out there? Preferably that work with win XP

Unless it throttles down at least 75 % of his CPU cycles and he has an SLK-800, he is not seeing 10C.

The free utilities such as Rain only executes HLT commands, which is usefull in win9X environments. NT OSes (winXP) already have this function built in. Utilities which offer more functionality, such as CPUIDLE (which includes chipset specific enhancements) cost money, so you are out of luck. On a side note, you can check your bios for such features. Mine has a "CPU bus disconnect" option.... which is one of the things CPUIDLE does. It disconnects the CPU from the bus when inactive to keep the CPU cool. Keep in mind that all these solutions only work when the CPU is idle. When the CPU is running at 100%, no software cooler will cool it down. Nothing beats a good heatsink and fan.

the program prob moderates or lowers cpu load in some way
it prob only affects yur idle cpu temp
