Software Boxes...know this has been posted before...

I remember seeing a thread about this some time ago but I didn't pay much attention to it at all. Why are they using small boxes for games? I have the whole Sims collection but I've seen the latest one in that small box. That bugs me. I want all my boxes to be uniform. Is this here to stay?

Why have a large box the size of a good book when everything in the package is the size of a cd? Most people throw the boxes away, which just causes more trash in the landfills. I personally like the small boxes 🙂

Retailers prefer them because it saves shelf space. In fact some stores now refuse to carry games packaged in larger boxes.

Yes, and I suspect that eventually they will slim down even further to DVD-style casing and no external box.

I am not so sure they will slim down to just DVD style casing. Some games still come with a real manual, and I don't see that going away completely. Of course it did with the consoles, but you don't get PC type RPGs on the console which is where I see the big manuals (Baldur's Gate series comes to mind).

I also like the smaller packaging. I always wondered why the boxes were so big in the first place you have a CD, and a fairly small manual and this big ole box. The new box size makes a lot of sense you can actually get 2 paperback size books in there with the CD if you want to. The box leaves a large enough area for art and game shots. As was said it also pretty much doubles the amount of titles a retailer can carry, and that is a good thing as well.

I also keep all my boxes, and I like the smaller storage space aspect as well.

smaller boxes also cost less.... the large box looked better but this still get the Cool Look in smaller package...makes great sense.....
