Softmodding to Workstation graphics

I'm currently setting up a computer to do some solidworks rendering and I'm going insane looking at the prices of "workstation" graphics cards which are essentially the same as their gaming counterpart with a different bios and drivers.

I know in the past it was easy to softmod nVidia and ATi cards into their workstation counterparts, but I haven't been able to find much *recent* information on any newer cards. Does anyone know if any near current generation desktop cards can be converted? I honestly don't have a problem paying $400-500 for a card, but I won't pay $1500+ for one with the same hardware in it.

I'm don't think any of them are physically identical. Or, if that would matter. I would think that it might.

The gtx-470 has a Quadro counterpart, but the 470 has less RAM. The HD5870/5850 2gigs have Firepro counterparts, but the monitor connections are different. I don't know if that would stop them from working or not.
