I have no interest in using XboxLive. Really, all I want to do is play legal backups and imports. That being the case, I've heard that modchips provide no advantage over simply flashing the bios chip of the Xbox.

How do I do this without some sort of linux setup or without the purchase of an actual modchip? Is there a way? If someone can help me I'd greatly appreciate it.

this requires substantive research. there are 2 methods to softmodding, the easier one being opening the xbox and hot swapping your hard drive with your PC. i forget the link.

Hey long time, no see! Hopefully everything is well with you. Definitely taking your advice, studying for the LSAT (games are a pain!) and doing well in school.

Softmodding the Xbox is cake. Use ltools on a USB memory card, which allows you to ftp to your computer, copy over your files from your computer to the xbox, backup your original xbox files, and you're set! A new dashboard (UnleashX) is installed and you can do everything that a modchip can, excluding turning it off to use XBox Live, which you don't intend on doing so. Takes about fifteen minutes and thrity bucks to do. Hope all is well Amitab:)

EDIT: Tha parts you need are the action replay memory card (you can use other things but this is more convenient), ltools, and splinter cell or mech assault to run the hacked savegame (the piece that allows the xbox to load a hacked savegame to FTP to the computer).
