Ok, I just got ahold of this program. It says its need Windows NT 4.0. It does say it will run on Windows 2000, but its even picky about that.

I am curious if anyone has tried to run it on Win98.. I think it may work, but I want to know if someone has actually had success with it.

I have 3D Studio Max 3.1, and its meant for WinNT/Win2K also, but it does say it will run on Win98, and that it does. I can use it without any problems. So I am curious about Softimage, This is one Phat program!

Anyone?!

Give it a shot, but don't hold your breath.

I don't know how familiar you are with S|I, but I assume you must have a rough idea of the level of demand it puts on your system, I'd say second to Maya for Win3D programs. 3DSM by comparison is rather lax, though 3DSM also can't do everything as well as S|I.

If it does run, don't be surprised if you have some rather serious stability issues on any Win9X machine. Also, are you running a nVidia or 3DLabs board? nVidia baors, using the Det2 drivers under NT had some issues running it, though I haven't heard feedback on Det3s or anyone trying it under Win9X. 3DLabs boards do OK, though they have their fair share of issues as well(not as bad as the nV Det2s), and AFAIK, they are the only two offerings that have Win9X drivers that can handle the application.

Post back with results, I'm curious to see how it turns out.

Softimage runs in NT only. It will probably works fine in Win2000 too. It will not let you install or run under win9x. It also requires at least 256mb of ram to run smoothly AND a 100% OpenGL card to run. I have no problem running it with my Elsa Gloria II card (the real one not the hacked Geforce).

I'm currently using Softimage 3.8 sp2. I can't get the 3.9.1 and XSI to run in my machine. Email me if you know how. It looks like it will run ok (w/ some problems maybe) with nVidia Cards even the old TNT.

I am actually using my good ole' TNT1 with Det 5.22. According to Softimage's site, my actual card, a STB Velocity 4400, has been tested and confirmed to work with the program. So Im not too concerned with that area. nVidia's OpenGL drivers are very very good.

Thats what I was worried about, a software lock.
