This question may be more suited for the networking forum...

I'm looking for some kind of equipment that will automatically reboot a computer if the OS has crashed.

Also, I need software that will terminate an application in Windows that has stopped responding (and maybe try launch it again, too)

thx.

I'm assuming you're talking about the Windows line of OS's, but if your OS crashes, how can you expect the OS to run any program if the OS isn't responding? The only option I can think of is a DOS program that was running before you loaded Windows, but then again how can it know how Windows stopped responding?

Also, even in Win2k some programs will hang (but not necessarily crash) and therefore show up under the Task Manager as "Not Responding". I'd highly doubt that you can find either program though . . .

A few weeks ago I saw a PCI card that remembered (in its memory) your last good configuration, and the minute you rebooted, it would restore your PC to that configuration, if you so desired. I've since lost the link to it, but there is a hardware device out there that will do this for you.

Then again, so does Windows 2000 (as does the other Window OS's, but Windows 2000 offers more backups). :)

You can set 2000 to reboot when it crashes, and you can also set services to restart themselves if they crash. Maybe somebody knows how to turn a program into a service that loads on bootup? Never tried or thought to before this.

There's a procedure for program-to-service on Seti@home ( setiathome.berkely.edu ). It's listed under the CLI versions of seti@home, describing how to make the Seti@home CLI client operate as an NT service.

Good Luck
