Not really a game question, so not in software

In the most recent CGW there was a quip about how NASA went from project design to actually having rovers on the surface of Mars, faster than 3D Realms has taken to develop Duke Nukem Forever.

I've tried searching about the rover stuff, but normally just get timelines about the mission launch/decent stuff.

Does anyone know when the project was originally started?

You've got to be kidding me?!?! I'm going to call my friend who's interning at NASA to see what he knows. Prolly not much though because he is an intern :p.

Sort of. One contractor assumed another contractor was working in metric when they were actually working in imperial units. Apparently no one bothered to check.

Nope. "Meanwhile, a NASA review board has started investigating the spacecraft's loss, as well as the loss of a previous orbiter which fell out of contact just as it arrived at Mars in September. That mishap was attributed to human error and mismanagement, including a mismatch of metric and English units in navigation commands sent to the spacecraft."

I used this in my class as an example of why equations should NEVER be written without units. Or in the very least, make all equations dimensionless so there cannot be a simple dimension error.

Conversely, maybe you yanks should just come into the modern world.

IIRC it was lbs and newtons, not meters and feet. Still hideously embarassing.

As an engineering student, I agree. English units = sucky.
