How effective is the Sodium Silicate solution they use to destroy engines in the CARS program?

So basically they drain the engine oil and dump sodium silicate in?

The engine is started, rev'ed up to 2000 RPM and the solution warms up from friction to ~210F. Water is driven out and silica gel is formed. So it's like there is abrasive anywhere that was bathed in oil?

Thats pretty cool.
 
That was not sodium silicate they poured into that motor. Sodium silicate is clear. That and I thought the program said you have to drain the oil then fill it up with a sodium silicate solution.

it was mixed in an ATF bottle. ATF is cherry red, so it probably was from the residue.

Indeed. At least here in the UK the program is for cars >10 years old. It seems like people are jacking in fairly recent motors over there to cash in.
 
The "cash for clunkers" thing has nothing to do with "helping" anybody. All it's actually doing is putting people in debt who can't really afford a new car payment.

The whole thing is nothing more than a thinly disguised effort by SUV-and-anything-that-isn't a-Prius hating liberal environmentalist nut jobs to get their rocks off permanently destroying a few older V6/V8 "gas guzzlers" while simultaneously banking that no new ones will be made because of new laws.

Destroying a nearly brand new truck from the looks of it; I mean the headlights haven't even started to turn yellow or anything. Pathetic politics.

It can still be stripped, this is just so people donlt get them and then return them to the street.

But that looked like a good 4.3L V6 s10. I have seen a lot of cars that were what people think of for this program, but that S10 looked to be in good shape.

The government is encouraging people to go through crap!!
People were down to buying cars out of necessity. On track for less than 10 million vehicles sold this year. Then this comes along (which is no different than the manufacturers ridiculous incentives a couple years ago) and now people are back to trashing perfectly usable cars to get government money.
 
What the hell, fill the most recyclable part of the vehicle with something that guarantees its landfill? Millions of pounds of aluminum and steel that could easily be reused and its all going to be essentially toxic waste ... great idea.

What they need to do, is ship the cars to mexico and sell them down there for cheap and kill the theft rings that steal cars here and move them to mexico.
