I tried avoiding soda for the past few months but man, trying to stay up late at night sucks. I tried drinking coffee but it's not the same for me. Anyways, I decided to make a nice lunch for myself and added ice cubes in my cup. Man, i notice it taste so much better w/ the ice cubes.

I won't drink cola without ice cubes. Too sweet etc, just makes me thirsty.

Gross.

I swear fast food pop has gone downhill in the last couple of years. I haven't had a good fountain drink in a long time it seems...

so thats why when i get coke at a fast food place, it always tastes good, but when i buy a bottle at the store, it has more bite and tastes worse i guess.

i thought it had to do with the mix at the restaurant and how it might not be the same ratio of syrup and water as at the coke factories

i think that has more to do w/ it being a fountain drink rather than something sitting in a can/bottle.

It's all about the calibration of the fountain, personally think they normally suck compared to the bottled version.

The ice cubes begin to melt at a slow rate and dilutes the acidity of the soda. When the soda reaches the perfect pH, that's when it tastes the best.

I'm a fan of just getting a 20oz bottle and pouring it in a glass with ice. Don't really but two liters, and the fountain drinks around me are completely flat. =/

I like fountain pop much more than bottled or canned. Glass bottle pop is pretty good though... hard to find these days.

Fountain pop + 5-6 ice cubes = ftw.

Yeah.

I swear something has changed with them. It seems like every fountain drink I get lately doesn't have enough syrup in it.

Did Pepsi/Coke go from calibrating the fountains themselves to letting employees or management do it, or something?

It's one of their highest cost/profit ratios, so I can imagine shady managers trying to eek out even higher margins by skimping on the syrup.

But on the other hand, its bad PR for whoever supplies them... I dunno.

I dont know maybe its me, but some fountain drinks are better than others. I've had better soda from KFC than McDonald.

That is used in a specific region, just like "pop" and "soda". None are superior to the others, although "coke" definitely denotes a brand as opposed to a general type of beverage. Iced tea is called sweet tea in the south, I am sure there are plenty of other regional examples.

Eli - Most restruants do their own calibration, hence the variance in taste. The profit margin is already so unreal it would not be worth trying to eek out another penny, they spend more on the cup/ice.

I usually prefer ice in all of my cold beverages, but that's just me.

The best ice is the ice chip variety you find in hospitals, especially maternity wards that they give to women in labor.

The reason it tastes better with ice is that soda is TOO sweet. The coldness reduces your sensitivity to the sweetness, so it tastes better the colder it is.

It's the coldness that makes it better, IMHO. I'd rather have mine cold but without the cubes.
