I have kentucky bluegrass sod that is over a year old but I think I got summer patch or it just burned up in a 15 foot section and it's just dead grass now. What's the best way to get that going again?

I raked it up best I can but the sod layer is still there and comes up if I rake it hard. Should I seed on top or should I rip up the sod layer and till the soil then seed? Is the sod layer any good anymore after the initial grass that's on it dies?

I was also told to put fungicide on it but not sure if that will do anything at this point.

Basically just want the grass full and green again. Oh and is it ok to throw turf builder on the good grass around it?

Rip the sod layer right off and discard, replace with sod. It's dirt cheap and you get instant healthy grass.

Bluegrass will go brown/dormant in high heat/drought. If you can lift the sod up you may have grubs, rake around the dirt to see if they're there. Otherwise it sounds like your sod never full got established, it has to be watered heavily and daily when it put on for a good month.

So it may not be dead depending on your weather this summer, but if you can lift it up the roots never got deep enough.

If you're thinking about doing any grass repair, now is the perfect time to do it.

Hard to say what happen without seeing it but it could have been insect damage or a fungus. Rip out all the dead sod, break up the dirt and put down some fresh top soil and quality seed. Keep the seed wet.

If the sod comes up that easily it didn't root. I can't tell what happened, but like the poster above figure it might be grubs, disease, or perhaps you didn't water it enough when it was laid down? Anyway, will have to come out.

Agree. If you can lift the sod then just lay down some new sod.

Water heavily for one month.

GO ON! Feed your sod... feed it!
