Never played SOCOM games before (well, played the first one on PS2 but didn't really do anything with it, played for like 2 days I think).
I'm turned off by the third person shooter aspect, but I have kind of adjusted. Only played it on the 15th, since then I've been focusing on the Resistance 2 beta (btw, awesome :)). Really only got it so I could have the official headset to not worry about voice quality anymore, and decided since the game bundle was only $10 more than the headset alone, it was a no-brainer.

It plays very well I'd say, feels like a solid shooter. Have only played the team deathmatch games though, haven't played the other styles.

How did you get into the R2 beta? I applied on the website and downloaded the Qore episode with the beta in it...is there some other date where I can start playing?

having an annual subscription to Qore prior to the release of Episode 3 (iirc) was one guaranteed way, and the other was pre-ordering the game. Public beta is currently open to only the annual subscribers, pre-orders, press passes, and Insomniac dev's/friends/family. So the GameSpot 500 code giveaway is included.
Anyone else that was guaranteed access, but not necessarily 'premier' access, will likely be able to get into the beta next week some time.

I played the beta of socom...and really i dont know what to think. Clan matches could be fun, but it REALLY seems like they favor those who sit back and camp all day. now, i only played it for a few days, so im sure there was probably more ways around the map than i knew of...but man, just seems like a total camp fest. Could be fun in a group though.. (okay, i just realized i just said the exact same thing twice...whatever). :p

I have to go pick up my copy I had on reserve at BBV later, I may not open it until the reviews and may just end up exchanging it for Fable II. I was a HUGE fan of Socom 2 and if this isn't good, I seriously am thinking about getting rid of my PS3.

From what I'm reading around the net, this version of SOCOM has tons of problems. At this point, I'm not going to open it and just exchange it for something else.

I have the game

FWIW, I am loving it. They have updated and patched the servers so it is running smoothly. I have to agree that the beta was horrible as was the Socom 2 beta.

If youre a Socom 2 fan like I was, you will love this game as it has gone back to its roots.

I enjoy it more because I run with the same clan I've always been with which makes it that much more fun. I can understand people not liking it if theyre not in an organized clan, because this is definitely a team game that requires good communication and teamwork to enjoy.

SOCOM Patches/Server Update

Hello,

I wanted to keep everyone up to date on where we are and what we are doing.

The consumer response to SOCOM: Confrontation has been huge. We are consistently seeing almost 100,000 people log in everyday with peaks of 25,000 simultaneous users. On average, you are playing about 3.1 hours per person with a total of 300,000 player hours everyday. I would like to thank all of you for helping to make SOCOM: Confrontation such a great success.

As I'm sure many of you are aware, the launch has not gone without its share of problems. Unfortunately, the server environment is not holding up during peak loads. We've made many changes and improvements to the server to improve the issues (the first few days were really rocky) but we are still seeing server issues when we get up to around 25,000 simultaneous players during peak hours. Our primary focus at this time is to resolve these server issues. We have all available resources looking into the issues and we are trying to resolve them as quickly as possible. It is not as easy as adding more servers, we have to identify and fix the bottlenecks in the system which are preventing the servers from scaling properly. The servers should continue to get progressively better as we roll out server side updates.

As a reminder, our scheduled daily server maintenance is between 5am and 8am PDT (8am to 11am EDT). We bring the servers down during this time to roll out updates. The servers will usually only be down for about 20-30 minutes but some updates may take longer.

In parallel to the server updates, we are also working on a new client patch which resolves some client side stability issues. These issues include getting booted to the XMB, large number of players getting disconnected from a specific game and other issues. We've been working on and testing this since the game launched and we should have a final version ready for release in the next week or so. It is hard to provide an exact date or timeframe as we need to make sure the patch is thoroughly tested and does not introduce any new issues.

We are also working on a patch to enable trophies and address various user feedback but this will be after the stability patch. Our top priority is getting both the servers and client as stable as possible before making any changes which could possibly cause other issues. Please continue to provide feedback in the SOCOM: Confrontation PlayStation.com forum. We do read it and use the feedback to make further changes and tweaks in future updates.

Well, the game package that comes bundled with the headset, the entire box shows the headset is included. But, inside the larger box is the regular-sized PS3 game case. But the only problem here, is that if wishing to resell, the area where the UPC would normally be, shows "Product Not For Resale", indicating it was not a standalone item.

If that would hurt potential sales on ebay or not, I have no idea. I have a feeling you won't be able to get much more than $20 for it, just because I bet a lot of people will be attempting that if they didn't like the game much after purchasing the headset.

You could just buy the headset alone, but I am guessing you are essentially trying to get the headset for cheaper than retail ($50 standalone). The game alone costs $40, and the game bundle (w/headset) is $60.
Might as well buy the game bundle, and give the game a spin and see if you can enjoy it at all. That's what I did, and I'm not too disappointed.

I've been playing only the respawn-enabled matches, which I have discovered is likely the cause for my slight disapproval of the gameplay style (third person, slow... yet people make it a run and gun game somehow and I do miserably). I'm currently choosing to play the R2 beta far more than Socom, because I really like it, but the next time I fire up Socom, I'm going to have to play a no-respawn match, as it seems like that is where the team work and slower gameplay would be since people don't want to die and sit there waiting for the match to end.

Another update hit yesterday.

We are happy to announce that the SOCOM: Confrontation 1.20 Update will be released on Wednesday, October 29th, at 1200 GMT/UTC (8am EDT, 5am PDT, 1pm BST, 9pm JST).

The SOCOM: Confrontation 1.20 update addresses the following issues:

* Fixed many issues which would cause the game to crash, hang, disconnect and exit to the PS3 XMB.
* Fixed an issue which would cause large numbers of players in a high player count game to be simultaneously disconnected.
* Fixed an issue which would cause players to be invincible.
* Fixed a physics issue which would cause players to occasionally "warp" around on the map.
* Fixed an issue where a "corrupt save data" message would be incorrectly displayed after updating the game.
* Fixed some player model issues related to team swapping.
* Client/server optimization.
* Fixed an issue where the scope camera had an incorrect offset from the barrel of the gun while prone or leaning/peeking.

For players who have already downloaded and installed the 1.10 update, the 1.20 update is only ~50MB in size. For new players, the size is the 1.10 update plus the 1.20 update which is ~550MB.

The main purpose of this update is to address major stability and playability issues with the game. The stability of the game has been greatly improved with the 1.20 update. There are still a few low frequency issues which we are continuing to look into and will be addressed in a future update.

We are reading player feedback in the forums and will be making future changes to the game based on that feedback. Please keep the feedback coming.

Regards,

SOCOM: Confrontation Online Team

Reading around, it sounds like the game is much more stable now. Drops are still happening but it is not widespread like it was before.

I might be interested, how much do you want for it?
