sockets

ok, so i'm new here.....question.

what is the difference between the different sockets available. I've seen socket a, 478, 775...etc.
I have no idea, so I thought I'd rely on all of you to help me out.

Pin sockets correspond to the processor they support.

Socket A = AMD Athlon XP and Duron
Socket 478 = Pentium 4 and Celeron
Socket 754 = Athlon 64 (Single channel memory only) and Sempron.
Socket 939 = Athlon 64 (Dual channel memory) and possibly Semprons in the futrue.
Socket LGA 755 = Higher end Pentium 4s for now, newer processors (maybe?) later.

You could write a couple pages worth of all those processor's advantages/disadvantages. Best to check out reputable websites and start a little researching if you're looking into building/buying a new PC or upgrading your current one. Decide your budget, what you will be using this new CPU/PC for, and what programs you will be running. The AT forums is also a fantastic place to learn about computers as it is a no BS environment. Don't hesitate to consult the community on future purchases( Use the search button beforehand, however. A LOT of questions have been covered endlessly ).

Yeah, I've been doing some extensive research on here. I'll be sure to check the boards for questions I might have, and try not to flood the boards with ?'s that have already been answered.
