I have an htpc running MCE2005 that I built with spare parts, and the mobo doesn't support suspend to ram (S3, where the fans stop running). I want to get this working so the machine can sleep silently, wake up and record a show, then go back to sleep.
Since budget is tight, I want to retain my 9550 AGP video card and CPU. I just want to swap out the mobo (a K7S5A-Pro). Performance isn't a problem with the current setup, I just need it to sleep quietly. I can't use hibernate, since it won't wake up to record.
I tried a Foxconn 748K7AA that Foxconn says supports S3, and even lets you pick it in the bios. However, when I go to standby (and I used Microsoft's sleeper.exe to verify it was actually going to S3), the fans keep running. I've searched everywhere, used the registry hack USBBIOSx, made sure S3 was enabled before installing the OS, etc. Seems to be a lot of discussion of this kind of problem with various mobos and setups, but nothing has worked for me so far. I haven't received a response from Foxconn so far.
I had also tried a PCChips mobo (Fry's deal, where the manul shows the suspend mode setting), but it was set to S1, and it could not be changed.
I'm thinking about the Abit VA-20, but with my experiences so far, I'm skeptical.
So, does anybody know (meaning have experience with) a budget Socket A mobo that will properly go to sleep and shut off the fans? It can be either ATX or mATX, as long as it has AGP, and at least 3 PCI slots.
Thanks in advance.
