I'm new here so be gentle. lol. I hope I'm posting in the right thread. Anyways, my question is what is the socket for my processor?

I have a Dell Dimension 4550, 2.4Ghz, Socket N (???) Intel Pentinum 4, uh...

I don't know what else is needed. I'm a retard when it comes to this stuff. But what I'm trying to do is get rid of all my Dell crap. I want to keep the processor but find a new motherboard that will accept the old processor (if thats even possible)

I know I can look on the bottom of the motherboard or processor or whatever and find out but I'm not on that computer (I'm at work) and I'm going straight to an electronics store after work.

So please let me know. Somewhere I heard it's Socket 478 but I want to get others input. All else fails, I'll run home and find out :)

Thanks!!

teh dell 4550 is socket 478, the 4550 itself will take up to a max of a P4 478 northwood 3.06ghz processor.

I had one for about 2.5 years, like it alot, only downside to it was that it had only 2 memory slots too it, i just recently (with in the last 2 months) got rid of it. I didnt think it was a bad system at all.

They did make 478 Northwoods up to 3.4GHz (EE). 3.2's are the fastest you can actually buy for less than a fortune. Some boards that take the later Northwoods will also accept Presscott cores up to around 3.0 - 3.4GHz, but it sounds like JWade knows for sure.

Dell must not have updated the BIOS for the faster models.

I'm in the same boat, but I have a 2.66GHz. Try as I might to justify it the Northwood CPU's are holding their value too well to make any sort of upgrade worthwhile.

Especially when you'll be able to get a 805 for under $100 pretty soon - it's time to take the full upgrade plunge if you want more performance.

That Dell only supports 533mhz FSB, so the 800mhz FSB northwoods wont work, the 3.06ghz Northwood on the 533mhz FSB is the fastest supported.

i went from the 2.4 to the 3.06 chip in my 4550, was a nice noticeable difference, only got rid of it because a guy i work with needed a good system at a good price.
