Is the P4 a different socket or slot or whatever than the P3. I would think it is but I have no info to back this up. What I want to do is upgrade in steps. First Mobo then processor and ram. No tengo dinero. So i would like to a board that i could use temporarily

Yes, the P4 has a different socket than the PIII's, so you couldn't use a new motherboard with your PIII and then move to a P4 on the same board.
